Research

Our research centers around the design of hybrid organic-inorganic catalysts, where an organic coating (monolayer, polymer) improves the performance of the catalyst. In the past, we worked on gold nanoparticles, but our work now focuses on single-atom catalysts. These are individual catalytic atoms can be stabilized on inert supports and maintain high activity, while being easy to separate from the reaction mixture, thanks to the relatively large (micron-scale) size of the support particles. SACs differ from homogeneous catalysts in that they are not surrounded by organic ligands, meaning they do not benefit from the ability of carefully-designed ligand to benefit the activity and selectivty of the reaction. We use organic coatings on the support particles to improve the performance of our SACs.

A coating of catechol molecules doubles the turnover number of a Pd/CeO2 SAC toward a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction.
